Registering an Imported Bike

Note: The new S.V.A. rules that came into force on June 17th 2003 for the registration of newly Imported bikes & cars only apply to bikes under 10 years old.

To register a bike brought in from the U.S.A. you will need:

  1. A completed V55/5 form “Application for a first license for a motor vehicle and declaration for registration”.

  2. A current M.O.T. certificate.

  3. A current Insurance policy in your name.

  4. Either the original American logbook or a certificate of proof of age (available from RB’s:  £20.00 Non-Club members / £18.00 Club members, plus  V.A.T. / P&P). If you present the U.S. title as proof of age the DVLA will keep it and send it back to the U.S.A. (you may want to keep it yourself so think about having a certificate instead).

  5. The £50.00 initial registration fee

  6. The cost of a tax disc if applicable

  7. Most vitally – the CE386 (or the equivalent) that states that the Import duty has been paid on the bike.

  8. You now need to prove who you are when registering a bike, so you will also need a passport or driving licence and a domestic utility bill with your name and address on it.

You will need to take this information along to your local DVLA office: they will want to inspect the bike if there is no foreign title (as from Jan 2002) and could either call to see it or you can take it to them.

If the bike has been purchased from RB’s it will have already been inspected at Nottingham and you may wish to consider sending all the paperwork to us and for the princely sum of £30.00 (plus the other applicable charges) we will go and stand in the queue at the local D.V.L.A. on your behalf (up to 3 hours)  – your bike will come back with an age related plate.

Once your paperwork has been processed, the DVLA will check the bike with Interpol and approximately three days later you will be issued with a registration number and the paperwork needed to get a registration plate.
